21 years back when my school buddy Prema was all set on a shopping spree to Chennai for her wedding trousseau, my ma asked her to pick up two Kanjivaram for me. I was getting married 2months after her, you see . Now I was very specific: one had to be in the tint this amazing singer M S Subbulakhshmi wore often ( at the time didn’t know that the tint had her name too.. MS Blue) and the 2nd one had to be this bright yellow. My pal’ mom grinned and informed me that both the tints were easily available, much to my relief. That was then; bought from Nalli’s, Chennai this saree had been a treat to wear whichever part of the World I traveled to but surprisingly never got clicked in!
Wore this Sunshine-yellow simple beauty to celebrate Lohri at a friend’s place. The saree has a woven border only on one side, a preference ; the weave on the anchal too is woven separately. Small flower motifs adorn the body. Incidentally, the saree came tassled from the store! Now, since the original 3/4th sleeve blouse that had smocking done on it got lost somewhere in all our travels, chose this all-over sequined raw-silk maroon zippered top to go with it. Bought from Kaufmann’ ( US ) but Made-in-India (Yay!) I totally dig the idea of shaking things up a bit with the Traditional sarees and have some fun with some fusion of sorts!
Happy Lohri / Makar Sankranti / Pongal , everyone!
