It’s a stitched-up saree for a ‘Bharatnatyam’ dancer in the black and white picture from 1960s. The blue saree with ‘rani’ (bright pink) colour and golden border is a beautiful Kanjivaram piece.

Today’s story is about a ‘Bharatnatyam’ (one classical dance style of India) dancer, it’s her birthday today!

During her teenage days, she had performed in various parts of India. She even performed in Amsterdam and some places in UK. She had to put a full stop to her dance performances after her marriage at the age of twenty. During those days, the profession of dancing was looked down upon in our society! She tells us stories about how passionate her father was with her daily practise and regular performances. She says that, if she was allowed to continue, she would have no less famous than Rekha and other Bollywood stars smile emoticon

Then I say, in that case, may be she would not have had a daughter in law like me:-) We two are poles apart in every aspect, but we both feel very close to each other. I must say, she does not carry herself as a mother-in-law. We became great friends.

She is a cancer survivor and continues to fight. She has associated herself completely in voluntary work in a psychiatric rehabilitation centre in a small town for past 7-8 years. She inspires many, with her artistic qualities and high spirits.

Many happy returns of the day, dear Amma!
