Wearing a Moobagam, 3 part saree in Kanchi cotton. Awesome combination of warm colours! With a kantha work blouse.
Earlier on I discovered that wearing a saree gets you the attention, the respect and the ability to get work done rather quickly, especially in Government setups.
I recall a time when I had to go the RTO to renew my driving license. The license had expired and I was happily driving around with an expired license!! Realized when I had to replace my cracked windshield. Insurance claims need valid DL.
Was in a saree, went to the RTO office and a parking slot automatically appeared. The attender asked to parked in an official ‘s slot and took my phone number, just in case’ sir’ came suddenly. Up on entering, immediately one of the staff enquired my need. And when I told him I need to renew my DL, he quickly put me through the process. He asked me to go downstairs and get the doctor ‘ s clearance certificate. And then asked me for me old DL. Then he looks at me and says ” idhu expire agidhe”. I say, “Howdu, adhikke renew madakke bande”. “6months mele agidhe….. Hmmmm” he says, “enmadthidhri”. I had no answer and was looking a little sheepish, and he provides me with an answer. “abroad hogidhra ?” and I nod my head hesitatingly. “IT company nalli idheera? Project mele hogidhra?”
By now, I caught on and vigourously say yes yes. And he says with a twinkle in his eyes, no problem. Stamps the papers, escorts me to the photo room, stops the queue, gets my pic done. Ask me to wait, gives me coffee. And after 10 minutes, Ta Da!, the renewed DL is in my hands!!!! And am proud to say I paid only the official fee and not a pie more! The magic of the saree and knowing Kannada !! Jai Karnataka!!
