Being a girl who grew in the most traditional locality of Chennai, I grew up constantly admiring crisp folds of sarees of most graceful women. In our neighborhood there were people from different regions hence I could admire many styles of wearing saree.
I always wanted to learn different styles and try them one by one.
I got the first chance when I was working in Pune in the year 2010, I was living with a Maharastrian family as paying guest.
There from my dearest Rashmi kaku I learnt how to drape the 9 yards saree popularly known as nauvari in marati, in its typical marati style. Wearing that I could realize how comfortable it was and wearing that we can run, jump, do anything but still the saree will stay in its place if we draped it properly. Later on I got married to a Chennai settled Maharastrian so the learning from her helped me to wear the traditional style during many occasions and family functions where many elder also get surprised that I wear it much better than how they do.
So when ever people complain to me that wearing a saree we can’t manage the whole day at work, I would say we just don’t clad it properly, because Jhansi Rani Lakshmi bai could ride horses wearing 9 yards and had baby tied to her using the same sari pallu and go for a war! Our routines are definitely simpler than that. 😉
