Yellow…. The color of the season!! My very first yellow colored saree and suddenly it is my favorite color… Almost…. Matches with Mangoes, the King of fruits. Talking of Mangoes reminds me of my visits to my periamma’s house in Salem, TN. A place known for its amazing variety of Mangoes, from Rasburi, malgova, thothapuri to chakkara kutti!! I learnt all about Mango varieties and the different ways to eat them from my Periappa. He is now close to 90 and lives on without knowing who we are., Alzheimers. It pains me to see him so….. My Periamma, mom’s sis, the awesomest cook in the whole wide world… Yet to come across anyone who can make a super stuffed curry with the tiny brinjal available only in Salem…. An amazingly talented woman, she would stitch, embroider, crochet, knit, paint, cook and her premium knowledge of Tamizh movies and the names of the actors, no matter how small they were, was astonishing. She was our source of movie gossip and we were so glued to whatever she would tell us!!!! She is the reason I got hooked to Tamizh movies, learnt to read, write and speak my mother tongue fluently, even though I am born & brought up in Bangalore, and it Kannada for me all the way… I also learnt some of her amazing skills but none to completion, unfortunately. Traveling to Salem in an ordinary bus on the dusty roads, with a stopover in Krishnagiri for Kaapi, tiffin gave us the best thrill of our lives. Today’s kids go abroad for school picnics huh!! ….. I am not sure if they are lucky or are losing out on life skills…. My Periamma is no more, passed away when my son was 3 or so….. I miss her sorely…. Thanks Raji Hari for the clicks
