After marriage I moved to Bangalore (Malleswaram) from Bombay. Those who know Malleswaram will know that no shops are open before 10am and everything is dead by 9pm. This used to drive me nuts.
A few lanes from there lived my grandfather’s youngest sister, Kumud atye (we call her komatye), the most elegant and oldest member of our family. She was the go to person for everything. From a bowl of dahi to blouse alteration to introducing me to a local baniya to taking me to a tailor. She would do it all happily.
She noticed that I needed more sarees in my wardrobe and took me to her friend from Malleswaram ladies association who used to deal in beautiful south cotton sarees. As we were browsing them, komatye happened to notice this one and held on to it. She loved it so I asked her to take it for herself. She said at 4.7″ height, if she wore such broad border Saree she will get swallowed by them, we laughed like little girls at this joke…. To make her happy I bought this Saree of her choice.
But, for years this was lying untouched in my wardrobe until recently I wore it to one of the events and loved it. Since then its one of my favorite . I guess with age you learn to appreciate finer things of life. Wore it again day before yesterday to work.
