It’s Vishu today, a Kerala festival celebrated as a new year as it marked the first day of the Malayalam Zodiac. I was least expecting to wear a saree today, forget the attire, I wasn’t about to go outside at all. And then, this Jasuu Jasna Arun, one of my chuddy buddies, invited me for their vishu celebration at home, all of a sudden. She was reaching Kerala today morning only from Jabalpur where her husband is in army. Like always, I was about to break in some usual wear, and that’s when this Kerala single piece attire from under the cupboard caught my eyes. This is an old saree that my mausi Noorjahan Kv (mother’s sister) gave me for a function at college during my college days, 8 years back. It’s still the same and has not faded a bit. I was suddenly wondering when I’m going to wear this again if it is not gonna be today!! It was an unforeseen decision to wear this plain cream single piece Kerala cotton saree with its graceful and appealing golden border. I paired this with another golden brocade jacket that I had against the peacock green one that I used to pair it with before during my college days. Beautifully woven, this attire is traditionally elegant and the cotton prints are pretty much regular wear which makes them super-comfortable. So, basically it suits not only every occasion but also every kind of environment.
Well, there’s widely believed that, when one sees beautifully woven and simple sarees adorning the bodies of women, one can bet that they’re from God’s own country, Kerala. The climate and the natural surroundings make our way for simplicity.
