A beautiful satin saree, with sequins on the border. It is a gift from my boyfriend in 2013.
The story is so sweet, that it brings a smile on my lips after 2 years.
He was trying to woo me, and didn’t know how to 😀 We were unofficially a couple anyway, and I didn’t know he was trying so hard to make a statement or I’d have asked him to take it easy; since I was never the conventional “woo me with theatrics ” kind of girl.
Anyway, he asked one of his friends for help. She told him to buy me something nice for Valentine’s Day. It was the end of January and when we went to watch a movie in the nearest mall; he kept a hawk eye on everything I touched and liked. I was a girl doing window-shopping and didn’t realise that he was noting everything down.
Two weeks later, amidst roses and music and the promise of our first “official date”; I got a package. It had this beautiful saree that I liked but didn’t buy because I felt it to be too expensive. Along with the saree was a set of red sandals, which I had admired. The icing on the cake was a little jewellery box containing this stunning set of black pearls; even though I didn’t look at them that day. He remembered it from my mentioning my love of pearls, months back. He decided I had enough white pearls and got me black ones for a change.
My first gift, from my only boyfriend, touched me so much that I decided to wear not just this saree but all the contents of that box for our graduation ceremony in April – the pearls and the sandals. This saree is all the more special because I received my MBA degree from Adi Godrej wearing this. It is a part of who I am – professionally as well as personally.
I got engaged and later married to the same boy. I got many more gifts from him, and many more sarees to fill my trunks. But this one, still takes a special seat.
