Saree #26

The Lungi is a traditional dress worn by Men and Women in most South Asian countries like Bangladesh,India,Nepal,Malaysia…and the most recently visited Sri Lanka.
Each Country have their characteristic Stripes or Checks patterns… they say it originated in the South of India many many years ago…
Unlike in Kerala this thortu is a very much accepted and appreciated form of attire worn commonly and across all stratas of people in Sri Lanka.
It’s a panche (in kannada)..mundu(in kerala)…and mekhla(in assamese-just that here the intricate weave..motifs..textures and patterns take the mere lungi to an exotic level)..
This 100% handwoven cotton lungi that I’ve worn is a tube stitched-one as against the open mundu…
In bolly…Zeenie baby was the first to sport a lungi in the song ‘Dum Maro Dum’ taking it to a cult level in the 70’s…
Here’s hoping the Lungi or any of its many avatars make a reappearance in the twenty fifteens!!
Wore this Sri Lankan Lungi to a Friends place for an almost inpromtu lunch that comprised of simple ‘kadhi chawal’ and Etc’s.
Cos lunch toh ek bahana hain..mil baith ke Baaton mein ulhajne ka!
