It was the summer of 2003. I had just returned after a hot and hectic sourcing trip to Gujarat and Rajasthan for my store.
I had exhausted all my resources to stock the store and sitting down to do my accounts, when an old man with a bundle on his head came by and asked me to look at his sarees.
I said no with all determination. so he just sat down and asked for a glass of water to drink.
I obliged , gave him a glass of butter milk and some fruit to eat.
He just sat there for an hour or so looking at me work.
Curiosity got the better of me and i asked him to open his bundle. Happy nothing interested me when a small wrapped bundle caught me eye. He reluctantly opened it and there were these 3 gorgeous Dhakai Jamdanis.
I took all 3- kept one and gave the other 2 to family. So never underestimate the smalltime sareewallah- you never know what you may find….. His son still comes to me.
