Shreemati Kailash Devi my grand mother was as grand as her name. She was born in the family of business giants of the time Hargoolal & Sons in Ambala city, Haryana India.I remember her immersed in Sharat Chandra’s and Annapurna Devi’s novels when everyone took their afternoon siesta during hot Indian summers.
I always saw her in saree, whether it was her summer pastel, starched cotton saris or black and white silk ones, she always looked so elegant and graceful. She used to get up at 4.30 am to do the hour chores and never complained that she is not comfortable in saree carrying buckets of washed clothes to terrace or cook meal on wood fire for 10 members of the family even in her eighties. She gifted me a one of her hand painted saree with golden thread embroidary and sitara work , which I have treasured all my life.I have used her portrait in many of my art works as well. She remains an inspiration and my hero.
