The picture of the girl in the blue saree is what we carried in an exhibition in 2002 for SHILPI of Chennai.
This saree is a natural dyed Kanchi Cotton with a geometric border . The geometric border was designed by one JAGADA RAJAPPA and came to be known as the JAGADA border. Many years later when i was sourcing for FABINDIA i went looking for this weaver and after many attempts found him- and to my dismay was hardly weaving any sarees. His children were engineers and CA’s and did not need to weave or a livelihood.
But he ferreted out this rat bitten damaged saree of the same weave( which I am wearing) and gave it to me saying it was the last he had in natural dye.
Happily i came back with this treasure but greatly saddened that we had lost one more weaver to globalisation.
Well that is the reality today.
Sorry – the pictures are not great quality- but did not know then that the #100saree pact would happen.
