My tryst with sarees is forever and dates back to the first rice ceremony at my 5th month when my parents draped me in a saree and dressed me like a typical bengali bride. Someday will share that picture.

However, today’s story is very special. Its special for 3 reasons – a). I was 7 months pregnant then, b) the first saree I made myself and c).I walked a ramp wearing this saree (a maternity fashion show).

I am no designer, but I love fabrics and recreating . So, in the October of 2013, I challenged myself to create a saree, unique enough for me to wear with pride. I went to a nearby fabric store, spent an hour to mix and match different fabrics to match with the body of the saree. The materials I used to recreate this are all cottons, some handloom variants and some ikats too. The outcome of this whole ‘recreating adventure’ was quite accomplishing. Thus when I had to participate in the maternity fashion show at my 7th month, I chose this cotton saree over blingy sarees other participants draped. I walked the ramp with my baby bump and loads of pride and ‘humble’ cotton seemed no more humble out there.

I am overwhelmed that my passion took the shape of the most special saree in my trousseau.
