‪#‎100sareepact‬ Day 14. I left home early today to have lunch with my Mamu and Mami Madhumoni Dasgupta before work. Before March, I would have slipped into a salwar kameez. But now every occasion demands a sari, even if it means sacrificing 15 minutes of sleep. This blue Maheshwari is one of the many saris my aunt (mashi, Matu to me) Dolon Sen gifted me for my wedding. When she came to Calcutta a couple of months before the wedding to help with shopping, she brought with her a few saris, including a maroon Maheshwari. But when she saw that I already had quite a few maroons in the trousseau, she went back to Mumbai and sent me this one. Most of the Maheshwaris in my wardrobe and my Ma’s are from her. The first Maheshwari I wore was a beautiful sea green one with an orange woven border that she had gifted my mother. Ma let me use the blouse piece that came with the sari while she herself got a plain blouse made. I was in college then and for Puja that year when I went out with some friends, I wore the sari. I still have pictures of that warm and wonderful afternoon and the memories are still fresh.
I wore the blue Maheshwari with dosta (an alloy of silver) jewellery from Santiniketan. The earrings are called kundal, made by tribals who come to Poush Mela. I had long wanted one and my aunt Chaitali Dasgupta got me this on one of her trips to Santiniketan.
