My friend and kindred-spirit, Kausalya Satyakumar has got me started on the‪#‎100sareepact‬‬‬‬. Thank you Kausalya. Ally Matthan and Anju, what a stroke of genius to make us share saris and stories! I can’t promise 100, but certainly as many stories as there are to share. It all begins with cotton, so that is where I will start – with a handwoven 40 counts Kornad, gifted to me by a gentleman whose family are now one of the best-loved names in saris in Bengaluru, a family of weavers. They trace their weaving history back 250 years, which makes me wonder what magical textiles they must have seen on their looms. When they first came here, the father would take the saris they had woven on the back of his bicycle, and sell from house to house. This beauty has a black warp, with sea-green and peacock blue checks. The blue thread is twisted, creating a lustre that is incredibly subtle and beautiful. It literally glows. The width is deliberately short, so that the sari was worn above the ankle-practical, but as his father pointed out, it also displayed delicate, alluring ankles! Despite it being such a hot day, the sari was cool and comfortable, breathing in a way most other fabrics cannot match. This particular piece was woven by the late G.N.Giriappa, and I am honoured to wear it.
