As a woman on a sabbatical from work, I knew I was a pain in the neck for everyone around, at some time or the other. I think I put on my “office voice” when I needed things done (my way).

Then came motherhood, making the sabbatical last longer than I had planned.

Jaya didi came to work with me, keeping my home, after my first born.

She worked with us till my second child turned one. Then, poor health made her retire from work.

Hailing from Madikeri, in Coorg, she was a refined woman whose fortunes had taken a dip and hence she had stepped out to work.

I came late to motherhood, but age never matters for a first time mother. There is no college you can attend on how to be a good parent, you learn on the job.

Jaya didi with her genteel manner, would show the way when I floundered.

Till today, she calls on every birthday of each child to wish them well.

She gifted me this Saree on the day she was leaving. Amidst many tears we said our goodbyes, she & I, both mothers to my children.

I wear the saree with pride and gratitude today. Pride for the milestones of motherhood over the past fourteen years. And gratitude for having had Jaya didi guide me with the experience of her motherhood.
