Gone Saree less the last couple of days and missing posting on#100sareepact so here is my Saree 7/100 …
Growing up as I did in the late 60s and early 70s and that too in a traditional and fairly conservative Tam Brahm household , the progression of my sartorial journey was from Paavadai / “Frocks” directly to Paavadai Davani ( the Half Saree) and then to the Saree.
I remember wanting so much to wear the Orange and Yellow flared pants and top combo that Zeenie Baby flaunted in Yaadon ki Baarat, but that was on my mother’s No Way My Dear list.
So when Jaya Bhaduri came on the scene with her lovely cotton Handloom Sarees with those Sanganeri prints and the fresh and breezy ones with little Booti / Border / Pallu designs one had a trend one could easily follow . And oh Boy was I Jaya Bhaduri fan ! The Cottage Industries showroom in South Extension in Delhi had some lovely ones and I would persuade Ma to please please please let me get one of those for every Birthday / Diwlai / Whatever occasion . The JB craze was so bad I would even do that Jooda with my long hair and wrap that Pallu around my shoulders …I remember my brother visiting from the US saying how this actress has ruined a whole generation of young women’s taste and style . But oh I loved my Pink / Green / off White and Beige / Maroon and Turquoise / White and Orange / Green combination prints so much that not even theses brotherly admonitions worked.
So when I was gifted this lovely printed silk from Fab India early this year I fell in love with it immediately and it brought back some wonderful memories …thank you again to your Mom @Shilpi Sirohi
It was January and the only time one can wear Silks in the daytime in Bombay and when invited to be with some good friends at a day long event organised at the Bhavan’s College grounds I was like oh wow I can wear this beauty
Seen here with me in this photograph is dear friend Abhishek who is a photographer , Yoga and Fitness guru and the guy who persuaded us to join him and his parents that day . His beautiful mother is another lady who wears the most gorgeous Sarees and carries colours so well
