Early last year, Shivani moved to Abu Dhabi to take on an interesting assignment with a company started by an Indian.
She continued to wear her sarees there also until she began to receive subtle, and not so subtle, hints about dressing for the global image of the company. She wore her business suits then.
More incidents and discussions on different issues began to indicate, quite strongly, that this move was not what she wanted for herself and her family.
So she came back and now has a fulfilling career teaching communication at a university and managing communication for the institution.
” It was that not wearing a saree and having to wear western suits, ( which I am equally comfortable in ), that was the first sign that something was wrong. The saree is me.They were asking me to change who I was. I’ve always worn sarees but the pact made me realize that when I drape a saree, I wear my identity. ”
Thank you, Shivani, for dropping in to say hello. She says the pact embodies ” stree shakti “.
More power to you, my friend. I’m so glad I was wearing a Saree tod
