Wearing an Ilkal with Kasuti work. And an Ilkal blouse to match. A year old and only when I wore it this time I realized the embroidery is machine done. Sigh! Never mind. I got the saree in Krishi Mala which happens every year in GKVK campus. Farmers and local producers from all over Karnataka show case their wares and sell directly to consumers. I have bought plants, rice, really dark jaggery, sarees, gardening stuff and various knick knacks from there, everytime!! My favorite mela. I love chatting up the people there and learning so much!! Did you know that we have lost more than 20 varieties of rice? That they have become extinct? All because they couldn’t survive the chemical onslaught of fertilizers!
Ilkal reminds me of Hubli. A beautiful town and our favorite stop over before we hit the road to Goa. We have done that several times. Stopped over in Hubli, before heading out to Goa. Warm, genuine people, second largest twin city of Karnataka and a different accent and way of speaking Kannada. I can identify a Hubbaliyava as soon as they start speaking ☺?? If Hubli is famous for its Ilkal sarees, Dharwad is known for its Peda. The Hubli to Goa drive is spectacular! Through Karwar and hugging the coastline of the Arabian sea. Gosh! Now I have to pack up and head there. More about our Goa escapades in subsequent posts… Happy Monday!!!
