Yet another gift by my amma. I can easily win the competition for the most pampered and spoilt Bahu in the country.
My first anniversary was approaching and amma and appa happened to be in town with us. She wanted to gift me something special for my anniversary, and knowing my love for Nalli; that’s where we went. We went through at least twenty sarees without liking anything and suddenly both of us saw this and put our hands on it together. This beautiful lemon chiffon with a golden woven border seemed to be just the thing the doctor ordered. We couldn’t take our eyes off it, and decided immediately that this lady was going home with us 😉
When my anniversary came, my parents-in-law very smartly planned their own outing, leaving us lovebirds free to make our own plans. When I was packing for my anniversary outing, I couldn’t help packing this saree even though neither the blouse nor the fall were in place. I felt it as owed to amma to wear her gift of love on the day. And hence, I packed this fall-less saree with a green brocade blouse from another saree and matching bangles. I kid you not, I felt like a princess when I saw myself in the mirror. Please excuse my vanity, but the subtle colours and the fabric all reminded me of my fashion idol, Maharani Gayatri Devi 😀
I haven’t worn this saree again, and the complementary yellow blouse is also ready (of course, I mean who doesn’t get a blouse stitched for 6 months, really). But somehow, I am more attracted to the lime green combination than the matching yellow. It maybe the memories and emotional attachment to the first time I ever wore it, or may just be my love for contrasting combinations.
I am certain however, of three things – a) I can trust Amma’s choices blindly b) no other garment can make me feel so beautiful as a saree does c) I am hugely indebted to the #100sareepact for making me wear sarees more often and without any conscious awkwardness of “log kya sochenge “.
It’s a shame really, to keep all these beautiful masterpieces of craftsmanship and these tokens of pure love from my mothers locked up inside a trunk. Wear them, flaunt them and they won’t disappoint you. They’ll repay you by making you look better than you imagined.
