The month of Shravan in the Hindu Calender is considered highly auspicious for praying to Lord Shiva. According to a legend, the churning of oceans or Samudra Manthan took place in this month and it was on a Monday that Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world. In order to lessen the effect of poison the Devas offered the water of the Ganges to Lord Shiva. So during this month the Shivalinga is bathed in milk and water day and night in the temples. The green colour is also associated with the month of Shravan.
I am not a very religious person but an incident that happened during one such month of Shravan altered my beliefs a little. It is also believed that if unmarried girls keep a fast on the Mondays of the Shravan month they would get good husbands. Does sound ridiculous. ..and far fetched? As neighbours we had a very staunch pandit family staying next to my parents’ place. Their daughters religiously followed the ritual of observing Somvar ka vrat in Saawan. They coaxed me to observe the same every year. This particular year I did give in. And lo and behold the very next month I got engaged to my husband and the rest as they say is History… Somvar ke vrat ka magic or not I enjoy this month a lot…it brings rain..hope…festivities. ..happiness and greenery…so this dual shaded chiffon with ambis on the border is an ode to this auspicious month. And now I shall go look for some :”Saawan ke jhoole.
